THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUP), on Tuesday, announced the suspension of its nationwide strike scheduled to take off today.
The decision by the union to call off the strike was taken at a peace meeting brokered by the House Committee on Education, between the Ministry of Education and the union.
ASUP national president, Dr Chibuzor Asomugha, at the meeting, said the union suspended the strike because of the assurance given by the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, that the Federal Government would address all the contentious issues they raised.
According to him, the contentious issues were the continued discrimination against graduates of polytechnics in the labour market, non-implementation of CONTISS 15 from the lower cadre, non-establishment of National Commission for Polytechnics and continued recognition of NBTE as the regulatory body for the polytechnics.
Chairman of the committee, Honourable Aminu Suleiman, then assured the union of the determination of the House to pass the bill on the review of the Federal Polytechnic Act into law before the end of seventh Assembly.
