BET announced nominations for the 2015 BET Awards, which will hold at the Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles, CA, on the 28th of June , several campaigns, guesses have began to flood the social media over likely nominees that will emerge winners of the highly coveted award.  For the category of “Best International Act (Africa)”, where top eight artistes in Africa were nominated- Sarkodie from Ghana, Fally Ipupa from DR Congo; Wizkid from Nigeria, Stone buoy from Ghana, Yemi Alade from Nigeria, AKA from South Africa, Sauti Soul from Kenya and The Soil from South Africa.

It was a moment of glory for the All Progressives Congress, APC, leader and former Governor of old Abia State, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, as Igbo leaders across the states of the South East gathered in Owerri, the Imo State capital to celebrate his success in politics and private life, especially the recent conferment of Doctorate Degree in Public Administration Honoris Causa on him by the Abia State University, Uturu.   The grand reception, which was preceded by a thanksgiving service at the Asumpta Catholic Cathedral, had in attendance, front line Igbo leaders including the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, National Chairman of the United Progressives Party, UPP, Chief Chekwas Okorie, Chief Okey Eze, Benjamin Apugo; Archbishop Anthony Obinna of Owerri Arch Diocese; HRM Eze (Dr.) Isaac Ikonne; HRM Eze Emmanuel Njemanze; former Chief Whip Eastern House of Assembly, Rt. Ghana announces three days’ national mourning after fire kills 90

Ghana President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday announced three days of national mourning after a deadly petrol station fire killed at least 90 people during heavy flooding in the capital, Accra. “Rescue operations will continue until the weekend, Sunday. On Monday, we will observe three days of national mourning for the victims of the fire disaster and flooding,” he said. The fire broke out at the filling station in the Kwame Nkrumah Circle area of the city late on Wednesday night and is thought to have spread from a nearby residence. Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama described the loss of life as “catastrophic and almost unprecedented”, as he toured the scene of the disaster on Thursday morning  Vangard reports . Continue...

CPJ Writes Buhari, Urges More Press Freedom

The Committee to Protect Journalists, CPJ, on Wednesday wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari, calling on him to make press freedom one of the priorities of his administration. The letter, dated June 3, was signed by CPJ’s Executive Director, Joel Simon, and copied to Mr. Buhari’s media aides, the spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress, Lai Mohammed as well as some top United Nations officials. While congratulating the president for his victory at the polls, the CPJ urged him to take steps to ensure that journalists in the country work freely and openly without fear of reprisal. Referring to Mr. Buhari’s inaugural speech in which he identified insecurity and pervasive corruption as his urgent concerns, the group commended the president for acknowledging the role played by the media in strengthening the country’s democracy. Don’t call me “His Excellency”, Abia State governor orders

The Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, has formally directed that the appellations: “His Excellency” and “Executive”, be dropped in all official and informal communications with him. He said he would rather prefer to be addressed simply as “Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, Governor of Abia State”. A statement Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Godwin Adindu, said,”The governor wants all public communication to be concentrated on the work and policies of the state and not on the person of the governor and has therefore directed all contractors, political groups, individuals and party loyalists not to put his portrait on billboards, posters and signages but to ONLY use the pictures of ongoing projects in their billboards and posters. “He is also, by this directive, re-assuring the good people of Abia State of his mission of service to the people and therefore urged the citizenry to key into the new vision.”

Explosion Rocks Yola Market | At Least 10 Dead

An explosion occurred at a Jimeta Main Market in Yola, Adamawa State on Thursday evening. It is suspected that the source of the explosion was a suicide bomber, Premium Times reports. A resident of the town, Salihu Aliyu said: “We just finished observing the Maghrib prayer when we heard a loud blast in the direction of the market… You know many traders also come out of the market and display their wares outside the main market to also observe the night market…there was even traffic gridlock in the area with many Keke Napep operators jostling for passengers when the bomb exploded.” An eyewitness said at least 10 people died and up to 30 were injured.
