Nigerian drug convict Daniel Enemuo and 5 other foreigners from Vietnam, Malawi, Brazil and Netherlands were executed in the early hours of this morning Sunday January 18th for drug offences. The convicts, who were killed by firing squad, are the first people executed under new President Joko Widodo,who took office in October 2014. He signed off on the executions last month..Brazil and the Netherlands have since recalled their ambassadors from Indonesia after the country defied their pleas and executed two of their citizens AFP reports. Brazilian Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira, was convicted of smuggling cocaine into Indonesia in2004. Dutchman Ang Kiem Soei was arrested 8 yearsago.

  Daniel Enemuo, 38, was also arrested in 2004. The others executed inthe Boyolali district in central Java were Namaona Denis from Malawi; Indonesian woman, Rani Andriani, and Vietnamese woman Tran Thi Bich Hanh.

Shell 'warned Nigeria pipeline could leak before spills'

  Oil firm Royal Dutch Shell was told a pipeline had reached the end of its life years before it spilled up to 500,000 barrels of oil, according to court documents seen by the BBC. Two spills in 2008 affected about 35 sq miles (90 sq km) in southern Nigeria, according to a group suing Shell. The area included sensitive mangroves. Shell "dismisses the suggestion that it has knowingly continued to use a pipeline that is not safe to operate," it told the BBC . The emails, letters and internal reports submitted to a court in London show that senior Shell employees were concerned before the spill that Shell's pipelines in the area had reached the end of their lives and needed replacing to avoid danger to lives, the environment and the economy.
