Against the background of the clamour by leaders of the Owerri senatorial district that the zone should produce the next governor of Imo State, a former governor of the state, Mr. Ikedi Ohakim, yesterday said it would be in the best interest of the state for his district, Okigwe, to produce the governor.
Ohakim, in a press statement said the panacea for political harmony in the state is for Okigwe to be allowed to do another four years which he was denied after the 2011 governorship election.

The former Governor, who has declared his intention to run for the governorship of the state again in 2015, maintained that the election offers the state an opportunity to lay a solid foundation for the much desired charter of equity “by allowing Okigwe zone, where I come from to do another four years to complete the eight years it is statutorily entitled to.”
While noting that he is an adherent of the concept of zoning and the charter of equity, Ohakim noted: “The only way to make it work is to correct the existing imbalance so that when it gets to the turn of another zone, the policy will be implemented without any rancour.”
He therefore commended the just concluded National Conference for recommending zoning of political offices, comparing the turn of event in the state to what is happening at the national level where he said: “Majority of Nigerians are requesting that President Jonathan be allowed to do another four years in order to complete the eight years the South-south geo-political zone is entitled to.”
Adding that “If Jonathan is not allowed to complete eight years for the South-south, it will cause problem in the future, but if we start with the South-south, then when it comes to the turn of another zone, things will move on smoothly.”
According to him, though he is not the only qualified aspirant from the zone, he has advantage over others because he is can only be governor for four years, stressing that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could take advantage of that to neutralise the All Progressives Congress (APC) whose serving governor is the only other fellow in the state that can do only a statutorily permissible four years.
