Concern as Rivers civil servants are unpaid
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed concern over the plight of civil servants in Rivers State following alleged misappropriation of funds.
"The PDP unequivocally urges the Rivers State Government to without further delay commence the payment of salaries to all affected civil servants and the Judiciary staff, who ought not to suffer for the wrong and irrational actions of the Governor and the All Progressives Congress," PDP stated. It described the non-payment of salaries as a clear indication of the unruliness and insensitivity of Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
PDP further said it took exception to the alleged diversion of funds belonging to the State in sponsoring the activities of the APC in Rivers State and at the national level and for the maintenance of a private jet by the Governor and his co-travelers.
The party said the current situation where the government was unable to pay civil servants salaries was avoidable and most unfortunate.
"PDP emphasizes that had the Governor heeded the advice and warnings by well meaning Rivers people and the Party, all would have been well with the State and the people, including government workers who would have been saved the pains and anguish created by Amaechi’s bad governance in the State."
The ruling party believes that the latest directive by the Governor for the stoppage of Judiciary staff salaries in the State is because the State is broke but the government only feigns to have done so in protest of the National Judicial Council’s position on the appointment of a State Chief Judge.
"PDP nonetheless sympathizes with the families of all affected public servants and by extension the entire citizenry whose rights and sources of subsistence have been breached."
