PDP lashes Amaechi over Rivers insecurity
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, of releasing suspected cultists and militants ahead of the 2015 general election.
The party said the recent release of 55 militants on trial before a Port Harcourt High Court and several other suspected cultists being tried for the July 2013 breach of public peace in the State and attack on the State House of Assembly by the governor had "political undertones."
The Rivers State Chapter, in a statement signed by Jerry Needam, Special Adviser, Media to the State Chairman, Prince Felix Obuah, frowned upon the alleged laxity with which Amaechi handled serious issues of insecurity in the state.
The party noted that it was "shocking" that the governor would treat cases of attack on local assembly legislators with "kid's gloves" and even order the release of the suspects.
Admitting that the governor had the constitutional right to discontinue with any case, the PDP however queries the timing of the release and coincidence with the heightened tension in the state allegedly caused by the All Progressives Congress (APC) faithful across the state who are angling for relevance.
PDP was of the opinion that the case would have been allowed to undergo the full course of justice and finally disposed of by the court based on evidences and witnesses before the court.
PDP alleged that the main reason behind the recent release of 55 militants who were currently standing trial for about 4 years now and the release of several cultists from detention is apparently to use them for 2015 general elections.
"This is unfortunate and a big threat to Nigeria's nascent democracy," the PDP declared.
