David Mark Tells International Community Anti-same Sex Marriage Bill Will Not be Revoked
David Mark, on Wednesday asked international community, gays and lesbians, who imagine that the bill banning same-sex marriage would be revoked some day to perish the thought.
Mark, who restated this position at the ongoing Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in Otukpo, Benue State, said the National Assembly was not moved by increasing criticism and pressure from the international community on the bill.
He insisted that same-sex marriage was against African principles and tradition, adding that the act was also offensive to humanity.
The senate president appealed to religious leaders in the country to exploit the weapons of prayer and fasting for the transformation of both human minds as well as the society.
According to him, doing so will help the nation to overcome the numerous socio-political and economic challenges confronting it.
"The church should continue to use her weapons of prayer and fasting; divine and human resources to actualise transformation both in our hearts and our society. Nigeria needs moral and spiritual revolution. And this is the time," Mark said.
The senate president urged the clergymen not to relent in their prayers for the sustenance of this democratic system, adding that the challenges facing the country are enormous but expressed hopes that "we will do our best to live up to the challenges."
Mark reasoned that everything humanly possible needed to be done within the ambits of the law to nurture the country’s democracy with a view to making it yield desired dividends for the citizenry.
In their Separate remarks, President of CBCN, Ignatius Kaigama and Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, harped on the need for peace and harmonious relationship among various religious groups in the country.
They also emphasised the need for every Nigerian to practice his or her faith without fear or intimidation.
The duo asked governments at all levels to do more than they are doing to protect the lives and property of citizens even as they pledged to continue to pray for Nigeria and the people.
