Trump says war with N Korea 'not inevitable'

                US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that military action against a defiant North Korea after its recent powerful nuclear test was "not inevitable." Speaking in a White House news conference along with the premier of Kuwait, the president said, "Military action would certainly be an option. Is it inevitable? Nothing's inevitable." "It would be great if something else could be worked out," he said, while adding that if it comes to military action, "It will be a very sad day for North Korea." UK finally declares emergency in Virgin Islands

          Britain is sending two military transport planes to the Caribbean on Friday to aid victims of Hurricane Irma as the British Virgin Islands declared a state of emergency. T wo planes loaded with "personnel, supplies and recovery equipment" were to set off on Friday, with one heading to the British Virgin Islands, an archipelago with around 28 000 inhabitants that was subjected to the full force of the mega-storm, a defence ministry spokesperson told AFP. On the ground, governor Gus Jaspert said he had declared a state of emergency, indicating there had reports of both injuries and deaths during the storm.

Pretoria teacher suspended after allegedly sexual assaulting 9 pupils

                   Pretoria - The Gauteng department of education says it is investigating a school in Pretoria after nine learners were allegedly sexually assaulted by a teacher. Spokesperson Oupa Bodibe said on Friday that the teacher had "fondled" the learners' private parts at the school last week. "The officials from the department visited the school already and continue with an investigation which will be finalised in due course accordingly," Bodibe said. Bodibe said the teacher had been served with a notice of intention to suspend him on Friday. He said the suspension meant that the teacher would not be at work on Monday, September 11, and that learners could go to school without any fear.

JAMB direct entry to close Sept. 15

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) says it will close the Direct Entry e-Registration portal on Sept.15. Dr Fabian Benjamin, the Head of Media and Information of the board, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday. Benjamin advised candidates yet to register to do so before the deadline, saying that there might be no postponement of the deadline. According to him, the new portal has provided a platform for the detailed category of the West African Examination Result ( WAEC ) of candidates for proper placement. “The first platform that was used for the exercise does not create room for the capturing of the levels of grade such as C4, C5, C6, B1, B2, B3 and A1. “And the first platform just stated A, B, C, so with this new platform, there will be room for the download of the level of grades. Dalung directs ex-sports officials to hand over

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has directed ex-sports federation officials who were still in possession of their body’s property or documents to hand them over to the newly elected and sworn-in officials. The Minister who gave the advice on Friday in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Nneka Ikem Anibeze, said that failure to comply might attract prosecution. “Failure to hand over within the provided period will activate the law. If you refuse to handover government property in your custody, you have invited the law to take over,’’ it said. Once it is established, Mr Magu will be invited to help evaluate the magnitude. If established, you’ll be given a presidential escort to Kuje Prison,’’ the statement said. It said the minister also called on the NOC led by Habu Gumel to get involved in the official hand over process of former presidents to the present ones to ensure continuity and a smooth transition.

Earthquake kills at least four in Mexico

At least four people were killed in a powerful magnitude-8.1 earthquake that hit off the South-Western coast of Mexico, toppling buildings and triggering tsunami warnings on Friday. The quake was centred about 87 kilometres off the state of Chiapas and struck at a depth of 69.7 kilometres at 11:49 p.m. on Thursday (0449 GMT Friday), the U.S. Geological Survey said. The shock was felt in the capital Mexico City, about 1,000 kilometres away, where frightened residents fled from swaying buildings and into the streets, many of them in their nightdresses. Patients were evacuated from some hospitals across the quake zone as a precaution. Classes were cancelled on Friday across southern Mexican states in order to inspect buildings to make sure they are structurally sound. Mexico has substantial quake activity and is also prone to other natural threats such as hurricanes, floods and volcanoes.

Breaking: Fleeing ritual suspect rearrested in Plateau

The ritual suspect , Ifeanyichukwu Maxwell Dike who escaped the custody of the Rivers state police command last month is said to have been rearrested by men of Plateau state police command. Dike was being held over the murder of 8-year-old Chikamso Victory in a part of Port Harcourt. He however beat police security and escaped on the night of August 20, 2017 when he was detained. He has been on the run since then, until yesterday night when he was reportedly rearrested at the North Central part.
