Kanye West and Usher to receive 2015 BET honours

US rapper Kanye West will receive the visionary award at the Black Entertainment Television (BET) honours. The 37-year-old is one of five acts to be honoured for their achievements in art, music, theatre, technology and business at the ceremony. R&B star Usher, whose hits include Yeah and Confessions, will receive the music award for his two-decade career. Phylicia Rashad, best known in the UK as The Cosby Show's Clair Huxtable, is to receive the theatrical arts award. Continue...

Bomb explodes near busy Kano market

At least one bomb has exploded near a market in the northern Nigerian city of Kano, officials and residents say. A blast hit a vehicle loading area at the Kantin Kwari textile market. Boko Haram militants are suspected of carrying out the attack. Eyewitnesses said the market was hit by two blasts. At least seven people died and 30 were hurt, hospital sources say. Last month more than 100 people died in a gun and bomb attack during prayers at one of the biggest mosques in Kano. Kantin Kwari is the biggest textile market in Kano, where people from neighbouring states and other parts of the country come for transactions. More Update soon.

Kenyan women with HIV sue over sterilisation

A group of HIV-positive women in Kenya has taken legal action against the government, accusing it of arranging for them to be forcibly sterilised. The five women are demanding compensation from the government and the non-governmental organisations they say carried out the sterilisations. Activists protested in the capital, Nairobi, to call for the practice to be banned, claiming it was widespread. The government has not yet commented on their allegations. Continue...

South Africa Prosecutors Win Bid to Appeal Pistorius Conviction

South African prosecutors on Wednesday won a bid to appeal the culpable homicide verdict handed down to Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. They said they would now seek a murder conviction against the Paralympic athlete. Pistorius, whose lower legs were amputated as a baby, shot dead Steenkamp on Febriary 14th, 2013 by firing four 9mm rounds into the locked door of a toilet cubicle. He, however, said that he killed Steenkamp out of the mistaken belief that she was an intruder. During the seven-month trial, the state prosecutor failed to convince JudgeThokozile Masipa, 67, of Pistorius’ intent to kill when he fired the gun at her. The failure led to Pistorius’ conviction for negligent killing – culpable homicide – and a five-year jail term in October. Continue...

A police officer attached to the Ikoyi Police station has been accused of physically assaulting a couple, 29yr old photographer, Ejeh Smith, and his wife, Grace, 26.
