APC threatens court action against NCC over fund raising

Image
Abuja – The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Sunday said it would institute a legal process against the National Communications Commission (NCC) to challenge the shutdown of some of its fund raising platforms. This was disclosed in Abuja by Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State during a meeting of the Fund Raising Directorate of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation. According to him, the directive to shut the platform was contained in a letter signed by the Director of Consumer Affairs, Maryam Bayi, Head of Legal and Regulatory Services Yinka Akinloye, on behalf of the NCC Executive Vice-Chairman, Dr Eugene Juwah. Fashola alleged that in 2010, approval was given to some parties’ campaign organisations to raise funds using such platform but that the APC is being denied the same right in 2015. ”We have advised our lawyers to go to court. They are preparing the papers now. In 2010 approval was given to other presidential candidates to campaign to raise fund (using such a platfo

EDITORIAL: We say No to Postponement of Elections

Image
The 2015 presidential contest would be one of the most keenly contested in Nigeria’s electoral history. The ruling party now confronts a single opposition force, an almost unprecedented situation in the country. As the campaign continues, the emotional tempo of the political process is deepening, stakes are rising and conspiracy theories are thriving. It is in this context that the suggestion for postponing the elections is a cause for concern. There are concordant narratives emerging, which suggest INEC is not ready for the February elections. These voices have been drowning out the voice of INEC, which has been saying consistently that it is ready for the elections. It is not surprising that many Nigerians are getting worried because of such messages claiming INEC is not worried. Over the past couple of years, we have observed INEC fine-tune its logistics in the organisation of staggered elections. INEC has neither withdrawn nor amended the Notice of Elections issued, with set tim

The bodies of the girls who were both 12 years old, were found at the nearby Igbo Ajogun forest by residents who immediately called the attention of the police. Obama, India's Modi cite nuclear investment breakthrough

Image
NEW DELHI — President Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Sunday they reached "a breakthrough understanding" in freeing up U.S. investment in nuclear energy development in India, as Obama began a three-day visit to India. Picking up from a stalled 2008 civil nuclear agreement between the two countries, the deal would allow U.S. firms to invest in energy in India. It also resolves a dispute over U.S. insistence on tracking fissile material it supplies to the country and over Indian liability provisions that have discouraged U.S. firms from capitalizing on the agreement The White House said the understanding on India's civil nuclear program resolves the U.S. concerns on both tracking and liability. "In our judgment, the Indians have moved sufficiently on these issues to give us assurances that the issues are resolved," said Ben Rhodes, Obama's deputy national security adviser. As Obama began his second trip to India – a first for a U.S. pr
