Photographer and poet Sandra Mbanefo-Obiago says that art should not be destructive or bring down the dignity of people but should teach something positive.
"I believe that art, including photography, dance and music should have inspirational elements," Mbanefo-Obiago said in Lagos.
The artist spoke at the Wheatbaker Hotel Ikoyi, the venue of her photo exhibition.
The exhibition is titled Unfurling, and would hold from June 9 to August 31.
According to her, artworks are able to show something from a vantage point that gives hope.
"I don’t subscribe to art that is destructive or that tears down the dignity of others. Amid all the pain and disillusionment, striving for success and challenges, there is still beauty surrounding us; we should endeavour to enjoy it.
"We hope that these photographs will allow our audience to appreciate anew some of the simple things that exist in our path everyday, which we rarely see,” she said.
The photographer urged Nigerians to admire the numerous works of nature.
"When was the last time you laid under a tree and looked up and admired beauty? We hardly do it now because of our businesses and constant activities,” she said.
