The Women’s League of South Africa’s ruling party has outlined its programme of action to show solidarity with the 200 schoolgirls Boko Haram members recently abducted in Chibok, Borno State.
Later on Monday, the African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) members and girl children will lead the process of candle-lighting at the Nigerian Embassy and light the 230 "flames of hope."
The party called on all South Africans and the people of the world to join it as it observed a moment of silence, wherever they will be, on Wednesday afternoon.
Starting this Thursday, ANCWL called upon all people to join a mass prayer services in their various churches, stadiums and other venues.
Every Thursday, the league said, would be designated a day for Women Prayer Services.
From Wednesday to Friday, there will be picketing in selected public buildings.
ANCWL urged all women of our country to use Africa Day on Sunday to highlight the plight of Nigerian girls.
On June 1, the Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities will utilise the official Children's Day Event to draw national and international attention to the plight of the Nigerian children.
The programme of action follows the ANC convening a meeting in Johannesburg to provide a platform for all interested and concerned organisations to pledge their support to the campaign to bring back the abducted Nigerian girls.
“As the Women's League, we are determined never to sit back or turn a blind eye while our girls' human rights are so blatantly and tragically violated. We commit to work with our women and men's organizations to ensure solidarity with the people of Nigeria.
"We will continue to promote efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women and children. The ANC Women's League commits to solidarity with the women of Nigeria, both Muslims and Christians, in every effort to ensure the safe return of the kidnapped school girls,” said Edna Molewa, ANCWL spokesperson.
The international community has expressed outrage at the abduction of the girls.
